Ingredients to Make This Oven-Baked Cabbage Steaks Recipe
To make this recipe for baked cabbage steaks you will need a few simple ingredients that can be easily found at the local grocery store.
- 1 whole head of cabbage
- 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- kosher salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 package nitrate-free bacon, 8-12 strips
How to Make the Best Cabbage Steak Recipe
First, preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Then combine the olive oil, minced garlic, salt, and pepper in a small bowl.
Next, using a sharp knife slice the end off of a green cabbage. The best way to do this is on a wooden cutting board.
Then cut thick cabbage slices, appx 1-1.5″ thick pieces. Remove any loose leaves that are falling off.
Depending on the size of your cabbage you should have between 4-6 thick slices of cabbage.
Prepare a Baking Sheet
Next, line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and place a wire rack on top of the parchment paper lined baking sheet. Doing this serves two purposes. First, it allows the bacon grease to fall onto the baking sheet so that the tender cabbage steak doesn’t sit in the grease. Second, it allows more airflow to both sides of the crispy roasted cabbage steaks.
Seasoning and Bacon Wrapping Cabbage Steaks
Use a silicone basting brush to apply generous amounts of the garlic olive oil mixture the cabbage slices.
Apply to both sides of each cabbage slice.
Then carefully wrap 2-3 slices of bacon around each slice of cabbage. Use toothpicks to secure the bacon in place. Bacon does shrink as it cooks so you don’t want to skip the toothpick part.
Repeat this for each cabbage steak slice.
Place each bacon-wrapped cabbage steak onto the wire rack (over the sheet pan) in a single layer.
Recipe for Baked Cabbage Steaks Cook Time
Place in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the bacon is fully cooked and crispy and the cabbage is tender and flavorful. At the halfway point, around 15 minutes, carefully flip each cabbage steak over to allow the bacon and cabbage to cook evenly.
It is normal for the bacon to shrink while cooking, which is why it’s always a good idea to load up the cabbage steaks with bacon if you can. Adding bacon to the cabbage steaks is a game changer.
A few of the outer leaves may also turn brown while the cabbage cooks, this is ok as well.
An Easy Side Dish for Every Cabbage Lover
Carefully transfer the baked cabbage steaks to a platter or serving tray, and remove the toothpicks before eating.
This easy cabbage recipe can be enjoyed as a healthy main dish or a delicious side dish.
These baked cabbage steaks with bacon are a great side dish to real steaks or pork chops. They easily pair with just about any of your favorite recipes.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. Reheat in the oven, or in a skillet to make sure that the bacon doesn’t become rubbery.
